Don't Let the Candy Monster Win: How to Survive the Halloween Candy Trap

You can easily avoid overeating Halloween candy this season by keeping the sweet stash out of sight and practicing mindful habits.
Halloween is fun, but the leftover chocolate and gummy bears can turn into an endless sugar trap. Use these simple tips to keep your sweet tooth in check without feeling miserable or deprived.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind
Hide the stash: Do not leave the bowl on the kitchen counter or your desk. Put the candy in a high cabinet or a closed opaque bin so you do not see it every time you walk by. Make it inconvenient to get to (like in the basement or garage)
Buy late and buy what you dislike: If you are buying candy to hand out, wait until the last minute. Pick treats that you personally do not enjoy so you have zero temptation to sample them.
Eat Smart and Stay Full
Eat regular meals: Hunger triggers intense sugar cravings. Eat balanced meals loaded with protein and fiber throughout the day so your blood sugar stays stable.
Time your treats: If you want a piece of candy, eat it right after a full meal. Extra saliva produced during a meal helps wash away sugar and protects your teeth.
Practice Mindful Moderation
Portion it out: Never eat straight from the giant bag or bucket. Put one or two small pieces into a small bowl, then put the rest away.
Don't ban it completely: Strict denial often leads to massive binges. Allow yourself a single small treat at a set time each day so you feel satisfied.
Donate or discard: Once the holiday passes, get rid of the excess. Donate unopened extra candy to community programs or local charities to share the joy and clear your home.
